Broncos Host Historic Track Meet Saturday
May 1, 2008
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara outdoor track team will be making Bronco history this weekend at West Valley College when they host their first track meet in the history of the program, the USF Dual Meet.
This will be the second time this season that the Broncos have raced against the USF Dons, and the team is looking forward to bringing in a few wins. Said head coach Tom Service, "The fact that we get to actually host a meet this year shows just how far we've come as a program."
Key races to watch this weekend include the men's and women's 3K and the men's and women's 800 M. "USF has some very strong female runners this year, so the 800 M will be a great race to compete and watch," said Service. Juniors Veronica Vazquez and Noelle Lopez will be competing in that event, with Lopez also competing in the 3000 M and Vazquez in the 1500 M.
Senior Michael Delaurenti, who just last Friday became the first runner in Santa Clara history to qualify for the NCAA regionals in the men's steeplechase, will be taking it a little easier this Saturday and will only be competing in the 1500 M and the 800 M.
Because of its proximity to Santa Clara, the team is hoping for a big turnout from the Bronco fans this Saturday at Saratoga. Service said, "This is our closest and shortest meet this year so it would be great to see a lot of people to come out to cheer for the Broncos." The first event of the day will commence at 11:00 am and the last event will start at 1:55 pm at West Valley College.
