On September 18, 2003 Tony Barcia was named the head coach for Santa Clara men's crew and served in that capacity for two seasons. He took over the reigns of the program he once rowed for after serving the previous two seasons as assistant coach in charge of the novice program.

Barcia replaced his mentor and former coach, Jay Farwell, who had been the head coach for Santa Clara since the 1998 season, Barcia's junior year.

"I am looking forward to the challenge and opportunity of being the men's crew head at Santa Clara University," said Barcia. "Picking up where Jay left off leaves me with some enormous shoes to fill. Under his direction, the program attained a great degree of positive momentum and I am going to aggressively pursue extending that momentum into future seasons."

Since the 2001-02 season, under Barcia's direction, the men's novice and junior varsity teams have experienced a great deal of success. At the WIRA Championships in Sacramento, the novice four made it into the Grand Final of the competition where they finished fifth. This was one year removed from finishing second at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia. The junior varsity team also shared in the success, claiming victory in their division of the WCC Championships in 2003.

A four-year rower for the Broncos, Barcia served as the team's captain in 1998 and '99, and was awarded the team's Most Valuable Oarsman in both of those seasons. During his sophomore season he rowed in the seven seat of the varsity eight boat that finished fourth at the WIRA's and won the petite final of the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic.

Barcia attained his degree in Biology in 1999 from Santa Clara and is currently a Staff Research Associate at the UC San Francisco Surgical Research Lab where he examines the surgical management of pancreatic cancer throughout UCSF sites.

Additionally, Barcia is still active in his rowing, competing as a member of the "Jedi Knights" racing team that competes several times each year on the West Coast.
